Battle of the Rio de la Plata, one of the first World War II naval communication between the German pocket-battleship Admiral Graf Spee and the British ships and New Zealand, started several miles from the coast of the estuary. The German ship retired to the mouth, and put the port of Montevideo. A few days later, the fight unarmed, was sunk in the estuary.These events were portrayed in the 1956 film The Battle of River Plate - also known as the pursuit of the Graf Spee - by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.
