A modern translation from Spanish of the Río de la Plata is the "Rio de la Plata", referring not to color, but the wealth of the legendary Sierra de la Plata, believed to be upstream.

English version of the name was inspired by one of the most important football clubs in Argentina, Club Atletico River Plate.

Río de la Plata is a habitat of sea turtle Caretta, Green Sea Turtle, Sea Turtle lute, a rare La Plata Dolphin, and many species of fish.
