If the Uruguay River is a tributary calculated Paraná, this watershed extends to cover much of Uruguay as well. Amount of water flowing across the Atlantic Ocean, the Rio de la Plata is roughly the same amount of Mississippi River delta. It is a service performed in several major cities like Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Asuncion, and Brazil.

Parana and its tributaries are the source of daily nourishment, and even the number of fishermen who live along the banks of some fish species (such as surubí and Sabalo) are commercially important and exploited huge domestic consumption or export.

Much of the length of the Paraná is navigable and is used as an important waterway linking inland cities in Argentina and Paraguay to the ocean, providing deep water ports in many of these cities. The construction of massive hydroelectric plants along the river has blocked its use as a maritime corridor in other cities, but the economic consequences of these dams are considered to outweigh this. Yacyretá dams and Itaipu on the border with Paraguay have very little undeveloped nation the world's largest exporter of hydroelectric power.
