The Paraná River (Spanish: Río Paraná, Portuguese: Rio Parana) is a river in southern Central America, passing through Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, some 4880 kilometers (3030 miles). It is the second in length only to the Amazon River among South American rivers. Name of Paraná is an abbreviation of the words "para ONAV Rehe" which comes from the Tupi language and means "the sea" (ie, "as big as the sea"). It merges first with the Paraguay River and then further downstream of the Uruguay River to form the Río de la Plata, and empties into the Atlantic Ocean.
